If you’re anything like me, as soon as your period cramps begin for the month you reach for the ibuprofen packet.
While medication can be effective on period pain – also known as dysmenorrhea – too many painkillers can be tough on the tummy.
Qualified dietician and distributor of Lunette menstrual cups Susan Johns has provided Newshub with some of her top tips to beating period pains naturally.
Vitamin D
The key to a less painful menstrual cycle is to make sure your body has the necessary nutrients to fight off body pain. Vitamin D, a fat-soluble vitamin, can ease period pains by decreasing inflammation caused by the uterus. Your body can naturally make Vitamin D if you get enough exposure to the sun, however you can also absorb Vitamin D with foods rich in fatty acids such as salmon, tuna, soy milk, almonds, cheese and egg yolks.
Exercise
If you haven’t already watched our ‘Yoga and Menstruation’ videos to help you with period cramps, I’m here to inform you that another great way to get rid of cramps is by simply exercising. Whether you’re a gym junkie, yogi, or runner, partaking in physical activity can increase blood circulation and make your cramps go away. Simple as that.
Heat
Nothing feels more heavenly than a warm bath or a heating pad on your stomach to alleviate those nasty period pains. Heat can help fight those uninvited cramps by relaxing the muscles of the uterus and improving blood flow. Don’t have a bathtub or heating pad? Grab a water bottle and fill it up with hot water, that’ll do the trick.
Orgasm
Ah yes, the ‘miracle cure’. Who needs painkillers when a little masturbation goes a long way? Orgasms release natural chemicals such as dopamine and endorphins that enter the bloodstream and induce sensations that enhance pleasure and relieve pain. Can’t get out of bed? Pamper yourself, it’s a win-win situation.
Aromatherapy
A simple yet satisfying approach to combating menstrual cramps is aromatherapy. Massaging yourself with a blend of aromatic plant extracts and essential oils can greatly reduce cramping and inflammation of the uterus. It does this by promoting the release of hormones to your brain (aka sending signals that reduce changes in hormone levels). You can’t get more natural than that.
